Michael Richmond, General Manager, Bouchaine Vineyards

The Carneros region is as authentic as those who live and work here. The Carneros Wine Alliance has created “The Voices of Carneros” to allow locals to share their insight and knowledge of Carneros, including secret spots in the region. “The Voices of Carneros” is published regularly on the alliance website and across all social media outlets.

I have spent the last 22 years living and breathing the Carneros region. After an apprenticeship at Freemark Abbey, I co-founded Acacia Winery in 1979. In 2002, I moved over to Bouchaine--just down the street--and became General Manager. I
have been here ever since.

My Carneros:

I found my way to the Carneros region on a cross-country bicycle tour in 1968 and fell in love with the area. I am an avid cyclist to this day. Also, I have a massage therapist certification, which comes in handy during Harvest and throughout the year at the winery.

Fun Fact:

Bouchaine is owned by Gerret and Tatiana Copeland of Wilmington, Delaware, they are very active owners and I function as their emissary and manage the winery with Greg Gauthier. The Copeland's aesthetic sensibility and philanthropic efforts support Napa Valley and the Carneros region at large. They are definitely an active Napa community member. Also, our Bacchus Wine Club enables us to make an array of wines, called the Bacchus collection, and include a dozen wines that are small in production and not in national distribution.

Secret Spot:

Two terraced hills located across from Acacia. This land is owned by Bouchaine and was originally owned by William Hill. The view of Carneros from those two hills says it all. You can see all of Carneros and the San Francisco bay area, including the Napa and Sonoma marsh and wetlands.

Carneros Wine Alliance
The Carneros Wine Alliance is a non-profit association of wineries and grape-growers in the Carneros American Viticultural Area (AVA).  Carneros is the only appellation located at the crossroads of two major wine regions, the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.  Influenced by the maritime breezes and fog from its southern border with the San Pablo Bay, Carneros produces the region’s finest Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wines. The Carneros Wine Alliance is committed to promoting the distinction, diversity and above all, quality, of the grapes and wines from Carneros.
