2006 Kazmer & Blaise Primo's Hill Carneros Pinot Noir ($50)
A joint project from the Molnar family (Obsidian Ridge) and Michael Terrien (Hanzell), this brooding Pinot hails from a 7-acre parcel of exposed river deposits in the very southern end of Carneros. The profile is sultry, full of loamy, earthy scents, plus sweet nutmeg and lavish cherry. Amid the plushness, though, you never forget it's Pinot - an impressive trick to manage in these days of dark-fruit overload.
