As American as the holiday

SaintsburyThe Washington Post
By Dave McIntyre

"...my vote goes to Carneros, which arcs along the northern edge of San Francisco Bay straddling the Napa and Sonoma county line, and the region's pioneering Saintsbury Vineyard. Established in 1981, Saintsbury set the standard for modern California pinot noir, and it is still among the best..."

Tasting Room: Cuvaison

San Francisco Chronicle
Janny Hu, Chronicle Staff Writer

"From the parking lot at Cuvaison Estate Wines' new tasting room in Napa, there are few hints as to what awaits inside - which is a good thing. It heightens the shock factor of walking in and discovering floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning, panoramic views of the estate's vineyards in the heart of Carneros.

"Predatory birds roam the skies, in search of frantic jack rabbits that skitter by, and we watch intently, riding in the back of a pickup, surveying the 100 acres of planted vines on the Bouchaine Vineyards estate. This is the oldest continually operated facility in Carneros —planted to vines and orchards in the mid-1800s by pioneer Boon Fly—and is still family-owned (by Gerret and Tatiana Copeland), but the day-to-day operations of this sustainably farmed winery fall in the hands of VP/Winemaker/GM Mike Richmond and Greg Gauthier, VP of Wine Production and Sales. Richmond, who founded Acacia Winery in 1979, is a recognized leader in developing premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from the Carneros appellation. Richmond and Gauthier began working at Bouchaine as a team in 2002. “We brought a modern perspective on winemaking,” claims Gauthier. “We’re not Burgundy-bound,” Richmond notes. “When it comes to Pinot Noir, we share a world development of knowledge with France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and even Israel. The fascination with this grape has elevated its standards for a new global movement.”...."

Pinot Noir Carneros 2007

93 points | $65 | 800 cases made | Red

A tantalizing mix of perfectly ripe, juicy raspberry and tangy black cherry flavors, with a rich, powerful loamy element of fresh earth, clay and spice. Licorice, kirsch and spice box notes detail the
