Saturday May 31st - Sheep Herding & Falconry

Sandy Milberg

This year brings a return of Sandy Milberg, one of the region’s most lauded sheepherders.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sandy has been involved with dogs and horses for most of her life.  She and her two sons showed hunters and jumper horses for many years before discovering Border Collie Dogs.  Sandy’s husband, Arthur, was a dentist prior to moving to Sonoma County in 1992 where they now live on a 144-acre sheep ranch in Santa Rosa and where they raise a small flock of sheep and where Sandy trains Border Collie dogs for sheep dog trials.  Sandy and her wonderful and talented dogs have traveled all over the United States and Canada competing in sheep dog trials.

Jack Mathieson

Also returning this year is Jack Mathieson. Raised in Redwood City, Jack is a retired software developer. He acquired his first Border Collie to do agility, and was rewarded with two “garbage cans” full of ribbons.  Following a herding test to determine whether his first dog had any instinct, Jack moved to Sonoma County and bought a nine-acre piece of land and a flock of sheep for his dog to herd.  He has been passionate about sheep herding ever since.  Jack now has three Border Collies, Tie, age 15; Jill, age 9; and Ross, age 3.  Jill has won many local events and almost always finishes in the first few.  The youngest dog is the son of “Ben,” the national champion two years in a row.

Karl Kerster, Kerster’s Falconry

Also returning for the third year is Karl Kerster, of Kerster’s Falconry.  Watch Karl and his amazing falcons as they demonstrate how they contribute to the health of our vineyards.
