Carneros - Fact or Fiction
There’s a lot of buzz about Carneros lately. We’re delighted that wine lovers all over the nation are talking about us. Just to keep the talk accurate, here are a few Facts & Fictions about the appellation:
- There is no such word as “Carneros.”
Fiction! There is a word, Carneros and it means “The Ram” in Spanish. The name “Carneros,” or “Los Carneros,” is derived from the days when our region was home to sheepherders, dairy farms, fruit orchards and hayfields.
- There is a line down the middle of our appellation separating the Napa side from the Sonoma side.
Fiction! Carneros straddles BOTH geopolitical boundaries. It is one unified, independent appellation.
- Isn’t Carneros also a sub-appellation of both the appellations of Napa and Sonoma?
Fiction! A sub-appellation is one completely surrounded by a larger appellation. Carneros is an independent, self-standing American Viticulture Area.
